Background
VELUX Commercial is part of VELUX, a global manufacturer of roof windows. At the Østbirk site, production runs across multiple halls, with material moving continuously from a central warehouse out to the production lines. Two pressures pushed the team to automate that flow: a tightening labor market and a clear ambition to keep people away from the heavy vehicle traffic the transport route runs through.

Challenge
The transport task runs on mixed indoor and outdoor routes shared with trucks and other heavy vehicles, passing through doors, gates, and across changing surfaces between concrete and asphalt. The core requirement was safety: the robot had to hold its own alongside that live while freeing the dedicated forklift and operator for higher-value work.
Main Story
Capra Robotics deployed a Capra500 fitted with a Capra Carrier Cart built to move standard pallets, so the robot works with the load carriers VELUX Commercial already runs, rather than the other way around. The robot runs fixed missions between the central warehouse and the production halls, and after an initial period aligning routes, gates, and network integration to the site, it now runs these missions in stable daily operation.







Results
The robot runs its daily missions autonomously alongside ongoing truck traffic, taking the operator out of that shared-traffic exposure entirely. VELUX Commercial has since expanded the deployment on its own initiative, adding a third route to a new production hall.
Next steps
With the first robot proven in daily operations, VELUX Commercial is scaling from a single unit toward a coordinated fleet, with a second robot scheduled for Q1 2027 and more routes already on the table. What started as one operator freed from truck-shared traffic is becoming the way the Østbirk site thinks about facility-wide transport.
